GOVERNORS MUSEUM

This
museum was once known as Seri Melaka where it was mainly use for
the Dutch Governor official residence and office
during the
17th century. The building retains its stature as the
Governor’s office and residence until 1996. In September 1996,
the Melaka Governor’s new official residence and office was
completed near the Melaka Palace in Bukit Beruang. This
building was then vacated and soon after was gazetted as a
historic building and was made the Governors Museum.
The act to turn
the building into a Governors Museum was to commemorate the function
of Governors (Yang di-Pertua Negeri) as the state highest ruler and
also to signify how important this building is to Melaka. This
museum exhibits brief history of the Melaka Sultanate institution,
the formation of Governors according to states and the Governors
roles and institutions. The Chief Ministers’ roles in governance
were also highlighted as they too play important roles in developing
Melaka into today’s present state.
The main
exhibits of this museum are on the past Melaka governors after
Malaysia independence day. The first governor was Tun Leong Yew Koh,
follows by the second governor Tun Haji Abdul Malek bin Haji Yusuf,
the third governor was Tun Haji Abdul Aziz bin Abdul Majid, the
fourth governor was Tun Syed Zahiruddin bin Syed Hassan and the
fifth governor was Tun Syed Ahmad Al-Haj bin Syed Mahmud Shahabudin.
The museum also exhibits their private collections while in office.
The museum
retains part of the original interior features of this building.
Apart from that, the museum also displays all the governors efforts
in developing Melaka, among others were their efforts in the
industrial and agricultural sectors, tourism and administration
development and religion affairs.
